Apalachee Music Together Classes Start Week of March 13th in Buford

By Rachel Horlacher, Publisher of Snellville and Lawrenceville Macaroni Kid February 12, 2019

My 2-year old daughter and I have been attending Apalachee Music Together class since the beginning of the year. I enjoy it since, due to Macaroni Kid, I don't have have much extra time to devote to my youngest. This is a dedicated 45-minutes every week that we get to play, sing songs, and hang out together just me and her. Each class starts with a 'Hello' song that incorporates the children's name into the song, so they can get excited that we sang their name. Then the songs vary each week, but with structure still there, wiggle songs, using small hand-held instruments, either castanets or shaker eggs, followed by percussion instruments to learn rhythm.

If we work with our children diligently when they''re young, they won't have my problem of not being able to keep a beat when they're older. True story, I was in marching band in High School and could not feel the beat to be able to march and play at the same time. It finally 'clicked' one day and I just got it, but I'm embarrassed to say it wasn't until I was 16. If I can instill that sense of rhythm in my children at a young age, then they won't struggle as much as I did.

The class ends with a lullaby where the adults and kids can cuddle 'lovies', and a closing song with name recognition again. At the beginning of each class semester, the parents are given a CD and books with the songs in them. That way, you can listen to the songs in the car with the kids and you both will learn them. Overall, my daughter gets so excited when we pull up into the parking lot. She won't sing, but she really enjoys the percussion instrument time. I should say that the adults don't have to have a good singing voice for the children and adults to enjoy it. Your kids won't judge you and they're your cheerleader, they love to hear your voice. I should also point out that this does not have to be solely moms taking their children, there have been dads, grandpas, whole families, and even nannies taking the children to the class.
