Opens Friday, September 2

By Brave PR August 26, 2016

The Center for Puppetry Arts will launch the Dean Dubose Smith Special Exhibits Gallery on Friday, September 2 with the world premiere exhibition of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Journey to Goblin City, A 30th Anniversary Celebration. The collection consists of items that have never been on display, including Goblin puppets, the plaster casts Hoggle’s head and the Worm, along with numerous weapons and staffs from the final battle sequence. Also included are the original set renderings by Elliot Scott and design drawings by Brian Froud, the well-known English fantasy illustrator who collaborated with Henson on both Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. The exhibit will feature original costumes and masks, as well as famous iconic artifacts, including Jareth’s crystal balls, David Bowie’s costume and a 13-hour clock.

Designed to be an immersive experience, the exhibit moves viewers along the journey into the Goblin City and through the creative process of making the film, from concept to production. The journey begins with detailed text panels featuring background information on the film. Once inside, visitors will move through three distinct sections. The first portion focuses on the creation of the various worlds inside the film, from puppet building techniques, design development and original goblin sketches, to puppet plaster casts and figures. From there, guests move into the Ballroom scene with its surreal iconic props, gowns and masks. The last section is devoted to the film’s final battle scene and includes weapons, goblins and original set and puppet designs.

Designed and built by the Center for Puppetry Arts staff, the exhibition will be open until September 3, 2017.
